Roger Federer v Grigor Dimitrov Head to Head
The pair have met seven times before, and, to date, Federer has a perfect record against the Bulgarian, winning on each occasion, most recently in the final of Rotterdam last year.
Federer Closing in on Eighth US Open Final
The 38-year-old Swiss player has won the tournament five times, although you have to go back to 2008 for the last of his victories. Despite that, he continues to defy his age with a series of performances that suggest any talk of retirement is surely premature.
He struggled slightly in his first round match, losing the first set to the Indian qualifier Sumit Nagal, before asserting his authority in the next three to win the match. A similar pattern emerged in the second round against Damir Dzumhur, Federer conceding the first set to the Bosnian, before rallying once more to win the next three.
However, he has since powered his way into the quarter-finals. Britain’s Dan Evans was despatched for the loss of just five games, whilst Federer made even shorter order of Belgian David Goffin, conceding just four games to the number 15 seed.
He has, however, refuted suggestions that tournament organisers have favoured him in terms of scheduling, although how it has panned out means that his matches have all been played early, allowing him the maximum recuperation period.
Federer will know, better than anyone, that he has an excellent chance of reaching his eight final in Flushing Meadows, now that his potential semi-final opponent and defending champion, Novak Djokovic, is out of the tournament with injury..

Dimitrov, Quarter Final Run Defies Recent Form
Less than two years ago, Dimitrov was three in the world. It is a measure of how precipitous has been his decline since that the 28-year old Bulgarian came into this tournament ranked as low as 78.
Yet the man who has won eight senior career titles, and has been a semi-finalist at both Melbourne and Wimbledon in the past, has completely defied that form with his run to the quarter-final, his best ever showing at the US Open.
He has had some luck along the way. After coming from a set down to beat Andreas Seppi of Italy in the first round, he received a bye into the third when his scheduled opponent, Borna Coric, had to scratch because of injury. He then benefitted because seeded players in his part of the draw had been knocked out, meaning his third and fourth round opponents, Kamil Majchrzak of Poland, and Alex de Minaur, were not as formidable as he might have expected to face at that stage of the competition.
However, he took full advantage of the favourable hand that fate had dealt him, beating both of them in straight sets.
Federer v Dimitrov Predictions & Tips
Federer is the overwhelming odds on favourite to win this match at 1/9, whilst Dimitrov is 17/2. Despite Dimitrov’s run to the quarter-finals, there is little in his recent form to suggest he is capable of recording his first ever win against the Swiss veteran.
Tip: Federer to win in three sets: 8/11 (888Sport)
