Rafael Nadal v Matteo Berrettini Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first meeting between the 33-year old multiple Grand Slam winner, and the Italian, 10 years his junior.

Nadal’s Relentless Progress towards Fourth Title Continues

Winner here of the event in Flushing Meadows in 2010, 2013, and 2017, Nadal must feel that he already has one hand on his fourth US Open crown, a win that would move him within one of Roger Federer’s record of twenty Grand Slams.

And he has good reasons to feel confident. Not only have his two great rivals for the title, Federer, and Novak Djokovic, been knocked out, but the other three men left in the tournament, on paper at least, give him nothing to fear.

He will also be buoyed by the way he has reached this stage. Apart from a brief half an hour in his fourth round match with Marin Cilic where the Croat found a way to cut down his angles, and force the Spaniard back, few of his opponents here have presented him with a real challenge.

Not that Diego Schwartzman failed to try his best in their quarter-final on Wednesday night. The Argentine battled back twice from double breaks down to level in each of the first two sets, only for Nadal to move up a gear every time he was under threat to establish a clear advantage.

And, with the clock showing well after midnight, and the Arthur Ashe stadium rapidly emptying, Nadal did the few spectators that remained a favour by quickly wrapping up the third set, and match, so they could all go home.

Berrettini Wins Classic to Make History

23-year-old Berrettini survived a classic encounter with Gael Monfils of France in their quarter-final clash on Wednesday, and, in doing so, made a bit of history. Not only did he reach the last four of a Grand Slam for the first time but he also equalled the record of his Davis Cup captain, and sometime mentor, Corrado Barazutti, who was the only previous Italian to reach the semi-finals at the US Open, back in 1977, when he went on to lose to Jimmy Connors.

Berrettini won his match with Monfils the hard way. On the back foot from the start and struggling with his game, he allowed the Frenchman to establish a set and a break lead, before rediscovering his form to win twelve out of the next sixteen games, and move to within a set of victory against a tiring opponent.

However, Monfils drew on all his powers of resilience to rally, and forced a deciding set. The Italian grabbed a vital break and served for the match, only to double fault on match point. Monfils promptly broke back, but Berrettini squandered two more match points serving at 6-5. The set went to a deciding tie-break with Berrettini finally getting the job done with his 5th match point in all.

Nadal v Berrettini Predictions & Tips

Nadal is the overwhelming favourite to win this match at 1/14, whilst Berrettini is priced at 11/1. Despite the fact that this is the semi-final of a Grand Slam, these skewed odds represent the enormity of the challenge facing the Italian. He has done very well to reach this final but, if he beats Nadal on Friday, it will go down as one of the biggest shocks of this, or any other, year.

Tip: Nadal to win in straight sets: 4/7 (888Sport)
