Serena Williams v Bianca Andreescu Preview:
Twenty years after winning her first major at the US Open in 1999, Serena Williams plays 19-year-old Canadian Bianca Andreescu in a cross-generational womens’ final. While Serena’s quest for title number 24 continues, the Canadian teenager has already outlived all expectations as she looks for her first ever major title.
Serena Williams won the US Open in 2014, and has been searching for a seventh US Open title for five years now. She last won a major in Melbourne in January 2017, following which she missed most of the year, leading up to and following the birth of her first child.
While she has not performed as well and consistently as is the norm with her, she was a finalist at both the 2018 and 2019 Wimbledon championships as well as at the US Open last year. Having missed out on the elusive number 24 three times, there is both pressure on and expectation from her, going into yet another US Open final.
Seeded eighth, Williams has had a confident US Open looking largely untroubled from her opener against Maria Sharapova to her semi-final against Elina Svitolina. Knowing the New York conditions and being a crowd favorite here has added to her cause and the short matches have aided her stay fresh for the final.
The 37-year-old, who turns 38 at the end of this month, currently holds 23 major titles which is the most in the Open era and a 24th title will put her at par with Margaret Court, who currently tops the all-time list.
Bianca Andreescu was ranked 208th this time last year and has moved to number 15 in the ATP rankings at the start of the US Open, with a 44-4 win-loss record since then. A defeat at the hands of Williams will place her at ninth, where as a win will move her up to fifth in the world rankings.
She began her year as a qualifier at the Australian Open and went from strength to strength winning at Indian Wells and Toronto, and defeating better known players from Gabrine Muguruza to Angelique Kerber and Serena Williams (the latter in a truncated Toronto final).
The 19-year-old has had a phenomenal run at the US Open and shown no nerves on the big stage defeating the likes of Caroline Wozniacki, home favorite Taylor Townsend and an inspired Belinda Bencic in the semi-finals. She is in excellent form and showing the composure and mentality of a seasoned professional.

Serena Williams v Bianca Andreescu Tip:
This is a difficult match to predict, as both players are in very good form at the moment. Williams has all it takes to get to the 24th major title, but it will be important for her to maintain her focus to avoid any sort of meltdown similar to last year. Her fitness, health and form seem right up there to gain the title.
Andreescu on the other hand, also has what it takes to win this match. If she is able to get off to a quick start, Williams will feel the pressure of the occasion and the scoreboard. There remains the possibility of the occasion getting the better of the teenager, but based on what we have seen thus far, she should be able to hold her ground.
Expect a very tight final with both players giving it their best. It can go either way, but it is hard to pick against Williams. On her fourth attempt in a major final, Williams to equal Margaret Court in a gripping three-setter.
Tip: Serena Williams to win in three sets: 10/3 (888Sport)
