The ATP Cup is set for its launch, will take place between January 3 and 12, 2020. This tournament is an international tennis competition played between tennis-competing countries.
The prize money for this tournament stands at AUD $22 million, creating the highest paying event hosted by the ATP.
A country will qualify for the ATP Cup based on the ranking of their number one player. Only countries with at least one player who has an ATP singles or doubles ranking and at least two players who have an ATP singles ranking will appear on the ATP Cup Standings.
The tournament will take place across three cities in Australia, and the draws will soon be out, informing us about which countries will be playing in Brisbane, Sydney and Perth.
There will be a total of 24 teams which consists of a maximum of five players and a minimum of three players per team; each team representing their nation.
There will be six groups of four teams per group, and each city will hold two groups. A team consisting of five members must have at least three players with an ATP singles ranking, and if a team has less than five members then there has to be at least two players with an ATP singles ranking.
Each team will have to play two singles matches and one doubles match for each contest, and a team that wins two matches wins a tie. Each team will play at least three ties during the group stages which means all the teams in a particular group and country will face each other at least once.
Following this will be the final knockout stage which will be played in Sydney between eight teams. The final stage consists of a quarter-final, a semi-final and, finally, the title match.
The first eighteen teams will be announced on September 13 along with the first two players of each team. The remaining six teams are to be announced by November.
