Karolina Pliskova v Petra Martic Head to Head
This is an interesting head to head between two players ranked second in the world and 23rd – with Martic’s best ranking being 20th – it’s 4-1 in favour of Martic, which is bit of a surprise. It includes a win for Martic earlier this year at the French Open but it must be quickly added that the remaining three victories had come in 2013 or before that. Pliskova’s only victory came in Miami earlier this year.
Pliskova Gunning for Her Fourth Title
With a 48-13 win-loss record in her favour this year and three WTA titles already under her belt, the only issue for the world number two is her inability to convert those into Grand Slam wins. But all of that can wait till the next season and for now Pliskova will aim to build into the season-ending WTA Finals.
Speaking of this match in particular, a win here would give her the fourth title of the season, something she has never done before in her career. Pliskova dropped a set in the quarter-finals against Sofia Kenin, but came back strongly to steamroll Ajla Tomljanovic in the semi-final in straight set to make the title-decider.
Grand Slams aside, it’s been four tournaments since Pliskova had even made the semi-final of an event, and a win here could remedy some of that.

Martic’s Excellent Run Takes Her Close to a Second
The Croat won a title earlier this year at Istanbul on clay and her record on that surface is one to behold – she has won 15 out of the 18 matches she has played on it. And before coming into this one, it was 6-8 on hard court surfaces, which is why credit where due, for a player that good on clay, making the final of at Zhengzhou will be something to talk about.
And in getting to the final, she has already got past Aryna Sabalenka and Kristina Mladenovic.
It’s that step up that will be a difficult one for Martic. Unlike she made the fourth round at the US Open and then faced Serena Williams and lost in straight sets to her, she would hope to dish out a better showing this time around.

Pliskova starts favourite but Martic can be expected to test her in this one. We don’t see a straight-set win for Pliskova but to keep it safe, we will go with the Czech world number to win this one.
