Matteo Berrettini v Roberto Carballes Baena Head to Head
The pair have never met before. This will be the first encounter between the 23 year old Italian, ranked 13th in the world, and the Spaniard, three years his senior, ranked at 77.
Berrettini, Brim-full of Confidence after New York
Berrettini coms into this tournament with a career high ranking of 13, and full of confidence after becoming the first Italian in 42 years to reach the semi-finals of the US Open. He lost to Rafael Nadal, the eventual winner in the end, but acquitted himself well and knows that, had he converted his chances in the first set, it could have been a different story.
That run was just the latest exploit in a highly successful 12 months or so, which saw Berrettini reach four senior ATP finals, and win three of them – in Gstaad last year, and in Budapest and Stuttgart in 2019.
Significantly, he has proved that he is now an “all-court” player. Although he grew up on clay, St. Petersburg, like New York, is played on hard courts. Meanwhile his win in Stuttgart was achieved on grass.
The Italian will now be looking for a strong end to the year, as he looks to build for 2020.

Carballes Baena, Success Restricted to Clay Courts
Carballes Baena, like many Spanish players, is most at home on clay. He won his only senior ATP title to date on his favourite surface in Ecuador in 2018, and all of his successes on the ITF and Challenger circuits – of which there have been a significant number – have all been clay court tournaments. They include two titles this year – at Murcia, Spain in April, and in Lisbon a month later.
It is not surprising, therefore, that all of his best results on the senior tour this year have all come on clay. He got to the quarter-finals in Buenos Aires, Madrid and Sweden, and his solitary Grand Slam win came in the first round at Roland Garros.
His straight sets victory over Martin Klizan of Slovakia on Tuesday in the first round was a rare win on a hard court.
Berrettini v Carballes Baena Predictions & Tips
Berrettini is the overwhelming odds-on favourite to win this match at 5/18, whilst Carballes Baena is priced at 11/4. Those odds are based not just on the Italian’s seeding and superior world ranking, but also because he is playing a man who is really only at home on a clay court. If the Italian can re-focus after his exploits in New York, he should win easily.
Tip: Berrettini to win in straight sets: 2/5 (888Sport)
