Caroline Garcia v Dayana Yastremska Predictions & Preview
A battle between two evenly-matched players when the 27th-ranked Caroline Garcia takes on Dayana Yastremska in the first round of the China Open. And this will not just be the second career meeting for them but also the second time they are facing off this year with Yastremska having won their last encounter.
Garcia was once ranked fourth in the world but those days are way behind her, as her 7-13 win-loss record on hard court surface tells you. Her opponent here, Yastremska, is on the way up on the other hand, winning 19 of her 30 matches on the same surface and having two WTA titles this year – on on clay at Strasbourg and the other at the Hua Hin Open.
Yastremska is also coming off a solid showing in Wuhan, having made the quarter-final where she went down to Petra Kvitova but she will be a favourite here and should come through. Expecting her to win in straight sets in fact but opting for a safer win market.

Kristina Mladenovic v Danielle Collins Predictions & Preview
This will be the first ever match between Danielle Collins and Kristina Mladenovic who will be facing off in the first round at the China Open 2019. Neither has had a particularly great record on hard court surfaces this season but Collins has notched up more wins than losses.
The American made it to the second round at both Wuhan Open last week – where she went down to the eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka – and at the US Open but her best showing has been undoubtedly at the Australian Open where she made it to the semifinal.
Mladenovic went out in the first round at Wuhan and Osaka after a reasonable showing at the Zhengzhou Open where she even defeated Elina Svitolina. However, that’s as far as she has gone this season in showing some sparkle because her other results have left her win 14 losses in 22 matches on hard court surfaces.

Wang Yafan v Xinyu Wang Predictions & Preview
It’s the battle of the Wangs, with Yafan taking on Xinyu for a place in the second round. And the Acapulco Open winner Yafan will be a heavy favourite to make it through to the next stage.
However, Yafan will do well to not take her opponent too lightly, with Xinyu having made it to the main draw of this tournament as a wild-card on the basis of her three ITF title wins this season. She has also improved from her season low of 326th in the world earlier this season to 164th at the moment and might be gunning for her first major scalp here.
Twice already she has reached the second round of main draws of WTA events this year, and on both occasions she defeated Chinese compatriots. Can she upset the 48th-ranked Yafan?
Yafan’s season looked to have derailed a tad after that Acapulco win but a semifinal at Seoul should have helped her confidence. She should take this in straight sets.

Christina McHale v Svetlana Kuznetsova Predictions & Preview
This could be one of the more interesting matches of the day as Christina McHale and Svetlana Kuznetsova, who have played each other four times before this, face off in their first round match before this. They have both won twice apiece, but have played just once in the last seven years, where Kuznetsova won on clay. Not much to go by then.
McHale, once ranked 24th in the world, was reduced to playing a truckload of ITF events this year, after having fallen to 149th in the world. However, she did improve to 100th a couple of weeks ago thanks to her third round appearance at the Hiroshima Open.
Kuznetsova’s history is an interesting one itself, as the experienced Russian continues to put in the hard yards and fight her way through her injuries. Having dived down to 198th in the world earlier this year, Kuznetsova made it to the final at Cincinnati but more importantly looked to have got her rhythm back with wins over Dayana Yastremska, Sloane Stephens, Karolina Pliskova and Ash Barty in doing so.
The Russian should progress to the second round and do so easily.
