Kerber, Having a Rough Spell in Asia
Three-time Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber has had quite a rough spell in the recent weeks. In five of her last six tournaments, the German has lost right in the first round. Surprisingly, these losses have come at the hands of many lowly-ranked players like Kristina Mladenovic, Daria Kasatkina, Anett Kontaveit, Alison Riske, and Monica Puig.
The only exception in this period was her run in the Pan Pacific Open where she reached the semifinal, only to lose to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. But that performance marked a period of slight rebound for Kerber as she moved up to the 12th place in the rankings.
But interestingly enough, it wasn’t until June-July that the number 10 seed incurred such a drastic turnaround in her form. She was more or less consistent at the time as she reached the semifinal in the Mallorca Open and the final in WTA Eastbourne. She had an equally scintillating run in the Indian Wells Open too, where she knocked out the likes of Aryna Sabalenka, Venus Williams, and Belinda Bencic.

Zhang, Seeking to Capitalize on Kerber’s Woes
As a prolific doubles player, Shuai Zhang has had a year to be proud of. She won the Australian Open doubles title with Samantha Stosur and later reached the final in the Miami Open.
But on the singles circuit, things haven’t been quite the same for her. Zhang’s performance has been quite mediocre on the whole, barring a few exceptional runs. She was the runner-up in the WTA Anning and later, reached the quarterfinal at the Wimbledon. She had a similar run in the Guangzhou Open, where she fell to Viktorija Golubic in the quarterfinal.
As for her last tournament, it was in Wuhan where she was knocked out by Sloane Stephens.
Kerber v Zhang Tips & Predictions
On any other day, Kerber would have started the match as the favourite to win but given her recent rut and the struggles with form, it is hard to say how things will pan out for her in Beijing. Expect the German to face a lot of resistance here in a fixture that can very well go to three sets.
