Kyle Edmund v Zhizhen Zhang Head to Head
The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the world number 32 and the man ranked nearly two hundred places below him.
Edmund, Looking for Late Season Form
Edmund has not had the best of years. Starting the world as a top twenty player, he has gradually slipped down the rankings, and has failed to build on the level of performance that made him a semi-finalist at Melbourne last year.
There have been some good results along the way – he reached the semi-finals in Eastbourne in front of his home fans, and was a quarter-finalist in Washington – but they have been the exceptions, not the rule.
In particularly, he has under-performed in the major tournaments – he struggled in all four Grand Slams and failed to make any impression in the Masters’ events.
Last week he was defeated in the first round of the Chengdu Open by Christian Garin of Chile.

Zhang, Chinese Wildcard Hoping to Impress
Wildcard Zhang has almost no history of success on the senior ATP tour. He has only ever won four matches at this level, with his best result coming in the Shenzhen Open in 2017 when, as a qualifier, he got to the third round, beating the Italian Paolo Lorenzi, who was seeded four for that tournament, and was ranked 39 in the world at that time.
However, he has had some success on the junior tours – he has been in six ITF Futures’ finals, and won two of them. And, earlier this month, he won his first ATP Challenger Tour title, beating fellow Chinese player Te Rigele in Jinai, to win the China Tennis Grand Prix Cup.
That win earned him his chance in Beijing.
Edmund v Zhang Predictions & Tips
Edmund is the overwhelming favourite to win this match at 3/7, whilst Zhang is priced at 11/5. The Briton has not been in good form this year, but he is playing a man who has almost no experience at this level. Zhang is sure to get raucous home support, but Edmund should win easily.
Tip: Edmund to win in straight sets: 21/20 (888Sport)
