Novak Djokovic v Go Soeda Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the Serbian, who has won 75 senior career titles, and the Japanese, who has won none.
Will Djokovic’s Shoulder Hold-Up?
For Djokovic this will be his first singles match since he was forced to retire from his fourth round match with Stan Wawrinka at Flushing Meadows with a shoulder injury.
To see how it would withstand the demands of a competitive match, Djokovic entered the doubles’ competition here in Japan with his partner Filip Krajinovic. but the pair were knocked out at the first time of asking by Mate Savic and Bruno Soares in sweltering conditions on Monday.
However, the result was less important than the match practice, so he will be hoping that he can now put his injury problems behind him as he prepares for the autumn schedule.
With the Masters events in Shanghai and Paris to come, as well as the ATP finals, Djokovic will want to win in Tokyo this week in order to withstand the challenge of Rafael Nadal to his number one world ranking.

In that time he has won 18 titles on the Challenger circuit – the most recent of which came in Winnipeg, Canada, in 2016 – and has appeared in 12 other finals, but has done very little of note on the senior tour, as evidenced by the fact that he he has never been beyond the second round at any Grand Slam event.
He has had the occasional win over top players, but they have been few and far between in what has been a largely undistinguished career.
Soeda, though, did have an impressive win over the German Jan-Lennard Struff on Monday, beating the world number 37 in three sets.
Djokovic v Soeda Predictions & Tips
Djokovic is the overwhelming favourite to win this match at 1/14, whilst Soeda is priced at 25/2. Playing on the same court which will host the Olympics in 12 months’ time, Soeda will enjoy his brief spell in the limelight, but, unless Djokovic has problems with his shoulder, it is hard to think of any way that the Japanese player could beat the Serb.
