Time Running Out for Zverev
With just five weeks to go for the ATP season to end, Zverev began this week under pressure if he wanted to reach the ATP World Tour finals. Currently, 10th in the race & three players above him suffering early-round exits or sidelined due to an injury, a strong showing in Beijing will boost his bid to make it to London.
The 22-year-old German has had a consistent season so far where he has reached three finals as well as made it to the last eight at the French Open. Although he has only won a single title this season compared to nine titles he won in the previous two years. His Laver Cup heroics recently will also give him a lot of confidence this week.
Last year he crashed out in the second round at Beijing, whereas this week, he has won both his matches quite comfortably in straight sets.

At the start of 2018, the big-serving American, Querrey was world number 10. He was coming off his best year on tour with a Wimbledon semi-final and the US Open quarter-final showing. He also won titles in 2017 at Los Cabos & Apaculpo.
But a spate of injuries followed, and his return to the tour was marred with inconsistent results that saw his ranking fall to as low as 79 earlier this year. He has played a limited number of matches in the last two years, compared to 61 matches he played in 2017; total matches played last year was 49 and so far has only managed to play 33 this year.
He did show some signs of recovering some of his old forms this year, where he reached the last eight at the Wimbledon and the finals at Eastbourne. But his form has dipped against since then with only five hard court matches coming into this tournament. He saw off in-form Diego Shwartzman in a grueling three sets to reach the quarter-finals.

Despite his short height, his retrieving abilities are impressive, and his consistent game is ofter his primary weapon to wear down his opponents. Querrey, on the other hand, relies on his big serve and likes to finish off the points quickly with winners.
Zverev’s court coverage and lack of form in Querrey tilts the advantage to the German’s side.
