Dominic Thiem v Karen Khachanov Head to Head

The head-to-head is tied at 1-1. Khachanov beat Thiem in Bercy last year en route to the title, while the Austrian avenged that defeat with a straight sets win in the quarterfinal of the French Open this year.

Thiem On The Cusp Of London Qualification

Dominic Thiem produced a gutsy performance to beat former World No.1 Andy Murray in the quarterfinal. Thiem’s reward is a semifinal showdown against Karen Khachanov, and should he progress to the final he will subsequently confirm his qualification for the Nitto ATP Finals in London for the fourth successive year.

Following a mid season lull caused by a virus and shocking first round exits at both Wimbledon and US Open, the top seed arrived in Asia looking refreshed after playing his part in Team Europe’s success at the Laver Cup.

Thiem is yet to drop a set all week and he never really looked in difficulty except from when he briefly tightened up while serving for the match at 5-4 against Murray. He crunched 35 searing winners from his racket and only 16 unforced errors in the last eight.

Khachanov Growing In Confidence Ahead Of Semifinal

Karen Khachanov battled hard to overcame Fabio Fognini in the other quarterfinal to reach just his second ATP tour semifinal of 2019.

The Russian has been in celebratory mood off court following the birth of his first child last month and will be keen to cap off the week with his first title in almost a year. Results on court have been odd and in many ways disappointing in 2019 from the powerful 23-year-old.

The disparity between his current world ranking of No.9 and his spot in the Race To London (currently outside top-20) is a danger signal, and a clear indication he needs points on the board before he returns to Paris for his title defense. Khachanov has so far been made to work hard in his three matches in Beijing, but he has navigated his way to the semis successfully.

Thiem v Khachanov Predictions & Tips

This will be an explosive semifinal between two muscular hitters on tour. Thiem always throws himself off his feet with every swing. Khachanov is not too dissimilar, but he is not as agile as the Austrian.

Tip: Thiem to win in three sets: 14/5 (888Sport)
