Karen Khachanov v Taylor Fritz Head to Head
The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 23 year old Russian, and Fritz, two years his junior.
Khachanov, a Semi-Finalist in Beijing
On the whole, Khachanov, despite failing to add to his four senior career titles, has had a successful 2019.
He has climbed into the world’s top ten for the first time, achieved his best ever showing at a Grand Slam when he got to the quarter-finals in Roland Garros, and was a semi-finalist at the Rogers Cup, and again last week in Beijing, where he lost to the eventual winner, Dominic Thiem. When his quarter-finals in Indian Wells and Halle are taken into account, and the fact that he still has a chance to qualify for the ATP finals in London, then he should feel satisfied with what he has achieved.
Despite that, his feats have been somewhat overshadowed by the accomplishments this year of compatriot Daniil Medvedev, who has overtaken him to become Russia’s number one player.
Shanghai is a good opportunity to remind the watching world how good a player Khachanov is as well.

Fritz Looking to Rediscover Mid-Season Form
Fritz has also had a good year, rising into the world’s top thirty, and becoming the number two ranked American player after John Isner. He also made three finals in quick succession, in Eastbourne, Atlanta, and Los Cabos, although he only won one, the Eastbourne International, his first senior career title.
Since that “golden spell” though, he has really struggled for form, suffering consecutive first round defeats in Montreal, Cincinnati, and the US Open. Playing in the Laver Cup for Team World offered some relief in the form of a victory over Dominic Thiem, but, since then, he was beaten first time out in Chengdu and, again, last week, In Tokyo.
His first round victory over Fernando Verdasco on Sunday, was, therefore, most welcome to him, although he had to work really hard for the win, battling through in three sets against the experienced Spaniard.
Khachanov v Fritz Predictions & Tips
Khachanov is the odds-on favourite to win this match at 8/13, whilst Fritz is priced at 17/11. Khachanov is in much the better form, having reached the semi-final in Beijing last week, whereas Fritz’s first round win on Sunday was his first ATP singles’ victory since August. Khachanov should win with relative ease.
Tip: Khachanov to win in straight sets: 5/4 (888Sport)
