Cori Gauff v Jelena Ostapenko to Head

This is the first meeting between the two players on the circuit.

Gauff, with a Dream Run in Linz

Cori Gauff, just 15 years of age, has had a season to be truly proud of. Having turned pro just last year, she has already proven that she has a bright future ahead of her and is one of the many rising stars to look forward to on the WTA Tour.

It has been a breakthrough year for the American, who started off on a dull note and eventually, found her groove. Ranked well outside the top 300, she has fought her way into the top 120 in the world. What helped her achieve this feat was a decent run in the ITF tournaments and of course, her famous run in the Wimbledon. As a qualifier, she made it all the way to the fourth round at the SW 19, defeating the likes of Venus Williams, Magdalena Rybarikova, and Polona Hercog.

She also reached the third round in the US Open. Now, competing in her first tournament since then, Gauff originally started as a qualifier and lost in quite early in Linz. However, by the virtue of lucky loser, she got a ticket into the main draw and has done a beautiful job of making the most of that chance. Starting with Stefanie Vogele and Kateryna Kozlova, she delivered the biggest win of her season in the quarterfinal.

Facing the top seed Kiki Bertens, she defeated the Dutch, against all odds, in straight sets to reach the semifinal. Building on that moment, she then knocked out the heavily experienced German Andrea Petkovic with 6-4, 6-4.

Ostapenko, Finally with a Reason to be Happy

Jelena Ostapenko, the 22-year-old Latvian, rose to the scene when she won the French Open title in 2017, defeating Simona Halep in the final. With a bright future ahead of her, she looked prime to crack the top five and build on her success further. But on the contrary, she has spent most of her time struggling with her form since then, leading many to speculate if she is a one-time wonder.

With a win-loss tally of 18-26 this season, the best Ostapenko has managed so far is reaching the third round in the US Open and Rogers Cup. In the rest of the tournaments, she fell right in the early stages. In Linz, however, she has proven to be an exception. Starting with Tamara Korpatsch, she then moved past the likes of Alize Cornet, Elena Rybakina, and Ekaterina Alexandrova to reach the final.

On the whole, this is her third final of the season. She won the Wimbledon mixed doubles title with Robert Lindstedt and then, she reached the final with Dayana Yastremska in the China Open. Now, Ostapenko can add a singles feather to her cap too.

Ostapenko v Gauff Tips & Predictions

This is going to be a cracker of a match. Gauff, on one hand, is young and full of energy while Ostapenko, on the other, is fighting for her pride and glory. This can very well go either way.
