Jo-Wilfred Tsonga v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head
This would be the second meeting between the pair. They clashed earlier this year on the clay courts of Marrakech. The Frenchman, Tsonga prevailed over Sonego in straight sets.
Tsonga Having an Impressive End to Comeback Season
Tsonga was once world number five and runners up at the Australian Open. From the year 2008 to 2014 was the best period of his career. He won nine titles in total, including two ATP Masters, as well as reached multiple Grand Slam semifinals.
A potent serve and a strong baseline game made him one of the most dangerous players on tour. Even at the start of the 2018 season, he was ranked in the top 20 in the world. But a knee injury forced him to go under the knife that year, keeping him out for most of the season. His ranking was once outside the top 250 due to this.
He started this year strongly with a title at Montepellier. But his results were inconsistent till throughout the year. He went out in the opening two rounds in seven tournaments this year. But since the US Open, he has been on a very impressive run. He won back to back titles, one at the Cassis Challenger and another at Metz last month. He also reached the semifinals at the Orleans Challenger. This impressive run of form has soared his rankings back into the top 50. He last appeared in this event in 2017, where he was the champion.

Sonego, A Claycourt Specialist will Find it Tough
Just like his opponent, the 24-year-old Italian has also made significant progress in his rankings this year. Starting from outside the top 100, Sonego is currently ranked 55 in the world. He reached the quarter-finals at the Monte Carlo Open as well as the finals at Marrakech, losing out to Tsonga.
He since then won his maiden title on the tour at Antalya and has followed it up with a challenger title at Genoa. His recent form coming into this tournament has been patchy. He crashed out at Metz in the second round followed by back to back first-round exits at Tokyo and Shanghai Masters.
Sonego is considered to be a clay-court specialist, and 26 out of the 44 victories he has achieved this year has been on the red soil. This will be the first time that he will be playing at this event.
Jo-Wilfred Tsonga v Lorenzo Sonego Predictions & Tips
Both the players have had a better second half to the season than the first. Both of them have also enjoyed a significant rise in their rankings this year. But as far as the match is concerned, the similarities end there. European Open is a hard court event played indoors. This will suit Tsonga’s game, who has a powerful serve and likes to hit the shots early.
Sonego likes to control the match from the baseline and imparts a lot of topspin on his shots. He will find it challenging to deal with the faster courts here.
Tip: Tsonga to go through in straight sets: 3/1 with 888Sport
