Martic in a Must-Win Encounter
It’s bit of an interesting situation for Petra Martic. She came into the tournament as one of the players to watch out for but lost in her opening encounter earlier today to Madison Keys in straight sets.
With Saisai Zheng having won her opening match against Keys, and also in straight sets, and with just one player making it through from each group, it comes down to this match to decide who enters the semifinal. For starters, Martic doesn’t have to just win but do that in straight sets to qualify.
However, that’s not all, Martic also needs to prevent Zheng from winning seven games (or more) to make it through, making it a potential contest to remember. If she doesn’t do that, Martic could be left ruing the manner in which she capitulated against Keys, in what was a clash between two excellent servers.

Zheng was expected to give Keys a healthy fight in her opener but to a lot of followers’ surprise she not only won that match but also did that in such a style that Keys was all but knocked out of the competition. That’s even after Keys had defeated Martic in straight sets in her second match.
And now Zheng needs to not worry about the result of her match against Martic; just ensure she wins seven games in the match to qualify for the semifinals.
The 25-year-old is coming off a title win at San Jose earlier this year, which was her first ever and while her more recent form has been slightly patchy, a semifinal berth here should wrap up a sterling showing this season. On her day, Zheng has shown she can even beat the best – as was the case in San Jose where Amanda Anismova and Aryna Sabalenka were both sent packing – but the big question is if she can maintain her consistency.
