Matteo Berrettini v Jo-Wilfred Tsonga Head to Head

The pair have never played each other on tour.

Berrettini Finishing an Impressive Season Strongly

In the latest set of ATP rankings, Berrettini has broken into the world top 10 for the first time in his career. Its a remarkable achievement from the 23-year-old Italian. It shows how impressive his year has been, considering that he was outside the top 50 at the start of 2019. He has achieved this feat by reaching into back to back semi-finals. First at the Shanghai Masters and then in Vienna last week.

Just a couple of months ago, he achieved his best performance of the year when he reached the semifinals at the US Open, losing out to the eventual champion, Rafael Nadal. Berrettini has reached the semifinals on nine different occasions this season, three of them where he went on to win the title. Two of them on the ATP tour and one on the challenger circuit.

This will be the first time that he will be participating in this tournament. Technically he needs to reach the final at Paris to guarantee a spot in the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London. But even a strong run this week will go a long way into securing his place for London as he is currently eighth in the race behind Alexander Zverev.

Tsonga Having a Solid Comeback Year

Same time last year, Tsonga was outside the top 250 in the rankings and was making his way back to the tour after a very long lay off due to a left hamstring injury. This year, the Frenchman has won two ATP Tour titles and one Challenger title as well as three other semi-finals. He is on course to achieve 50 victories on tour for the first time since 2012.

With a potent serve and one of the strongest baseline games on tour, Tsonga was considered to be one of the most dangerous players on tour. Between 2008 and 2014, he won a total of 12 titles, which included two masters as well as multiple grand slam semifinals. But inconsistent form and injuries have halted his career on many occasions. In fact, 2019 is the first time in five years that Tsonga has played 60 matches in a calendar year.

Tsonga was the quarter-finalist in Paris in 2016. His first-round victory against Andrey Rublev was the first time he won a masters match since 2017.

Matteo Berrettini v Jo-Wilfred Tsonga Predictions & Tips

This is a contest between two in-form players. Tsonga is playing in front of his home crowd and has an impressive 15-3 record since the US Open. He also has a strong serve, which is going to be a huge help in the indoor conditions. Berrettini, on the other hand, has just become the fourth Italian ever to break into the top 10 in rankings. He is also very close to qualification in London.

It is going to be a close contest between the two. More consistency and better court coverage of Berrettini will give him an advantage.
