Fabio Fognini v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head

This will be the third meeting between the pair. The Canadian has won both their previous matches. First at the Toronto Masters last year and then at Boodles Tennis Challange earlier this year.

Fognini Losing Form at Crucial Time

After reaching back to back quarter-finals at Shanghai and Beijing, it looked that the Italian had put his US Open first-round exit’s disappointment behind him. He looked set to continue his form and secure his qualification for the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals in London.

But in the last two weeks, he has lost in the early rounds at Stockholm and Basel. He has lost the momentum he had via an impressive Asian hard court swing as well as some crucial ranking points.

Fognini was very impressive on the clay courts this year. He won the Monte Carlo Open, where he beat likes of Rafael Nadal and Alexander Zverev on the way. He also followed it up with three impressive showings at Madrid Masters, Rome, and the French Open. But his season has suffered from inconsistent results and controversies off the field, making headlines for him.

He has crashed out in the first match he has played in a tournament eight times this season. Also, news of his sudden break up with his coach Franco Davin, his on-court spat with Andy Murray at the Shanghai Masters, and him spitting at the linesman after a foot fault is just some examples of him being in the news for reasons other than his game.

He reached the last 16 in Paris last year, and he will be hoping to not only match it but go even further to put his qualification to London back on track.

Strong End to the Season for Shapovalov

After breaking his terrible streak of losing in semi-finals of ATP events seven times in a row, the young Canadian finally went on to win his maiden title on the tour in Stockholm. The victory also secured his second appearance at the year-ending ATP Gen Next Finals in Milan.

Shapovalov broke into the top 20 in the world earlier this year. He was the prime candidate to become the top Canadian player on tour by overtaking Milos Raonic. But apart from a semi-final appearance at Miami, the first half of his season had many shock losses and inconsistent results halting his progress further. But two semi-finals either side of the US Open, once at Winston Salem and another at Chengdu put his season back on track.

This is Shapovalov’s third appearance in Paris. He went out in the first round itself for the last two years. This week his first-round opponent, Gilles Simon, retired due to a groin injury when the first set was tied at 2-2. Shapovalov would be hoping to go deep in the tournament to gain some vital ranking points.

Fabio Fognini v Denis Shapovalov Predictions & Tips

Despite Fognini being higher ranked then Shapovalov, the Canadian will go into the match as a slight favorite. The 20-year-old is on a good run with his first-ever title and qualification to Milan wrapped up. Fognini, on the other hand, has lost form at a crucial point in the season.

Tip: Shapovalov to win in straight sets: 11/10 at 888Sport
