Dominic Thiem v Milos Raonic Head to Head
These two have been involved in three matches and Raonic, the former world number three leads 2-1. Both his wins, however, came in 2016 while Thiem won their only encounter that was played earlier this year at the Indian Wells Masters.
Tough Opener Thiem after Vienna Win
Thiem would have been particularly glad with the way things have gone over the last one month or so. Often playing at his best on clay, Thiem won two of the last three tournaments he participated in – at the China Open and the Vienna Open – on surfaces other than his favourite one.
At Beijing, the win sounded sweeter with victories over Andy Murray, Karen Khachanov and Stefanos Tsitsipas, and at Vienna, it was just his second indoors title overall and first of the year. All in all, it bodes well for the Austrian who is going to be one of the players featuring at the ATP Finals.
Now comes a challenging opener. After receiving a first round bye, he will be up against an opponent who has not just beaten him twice but also only recently slid out of the top 30 in the rankings.

Can Raonic Turn His Poor Season Around?
The Canadian Raonic won his last title in 2016, but as far as seasons go, a 22-13 win-loss record this year is quite poor for a former world number three. On indoor courts, he is 2-4 this season, which includes a couple of losses at the Laver Cup, and a shock defeat in the Vienna Open opener.
Things didn’t look so bad for Raonic earlier though. He had begun the season with a chance to make the Australian Open semi-final when he went down to Lucas Pouille in the last-eight and then entered the Indian Wells semi-finals. It was that defeat to Thiem himself at Indian Wells that looked to have changed things around, and with a lumbar spine injury adding to his woes, the season was never the same again.
Dominic Thiem v Milos Raonic Predictions & Tips
Despite what’s happened earlier this year, Raonic is never an easy opponent to face on such surfaces and Thiem can be expected to face a lot of challenge from the Canadian. Will Raonic win a set? We think so, and Thiem might need to fight tooth and nail to get past his opponent in this one.
Tip: Three sets in the match: 8/5 at 888Sport
