Rafael Nadal v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Head to Head

This is an old rivalry, and when one includes all matches at every level, this will be the 15th time they will be facing off. Interestingly, and despite what one said in the opening lines above, Tsonga has won four of their 14 matches, which is quite a decent record for someone against a Fab Three, for outside of the Fab Three.

Only problem is one needs to look at these records with some context, with the duo having played just one match over the last four years and that led to a straight-set win for Nadal at Wimbledon.

Nadal Trumps Stomach Issue, Wawrinka

With a straight-set thrashing of Stan Wawrinka, Nadal managed to register his 50th win of the season. He has lost just nine matches in the process, and the last loss came in July in the semifinals at Wimbledon. Since then, a title win at Montreal, another at the US Open, a victory at Laver Cup and back to back wins here have meant that Nadal is on a 14-match winning streak.

And on the odd occasion he has even lost a set, Nadal’s has dug in deep into his mental and physical reserves and come back trumps. He broke Wawrinka early and faced just one break-point in the entire match to come through easily.

Nadal had more issues with a stomach problem than Wawrinka himself, needing treatment from the tournament doctor in the second set. Later, he came through without too much trouble with his ailment which is good news for his fans.

From 210 to Potential Top 30 for Tsonga

Former world number five Tsonga had fallen to a season low of 262nd last season and ended the year at 239th. His lowest this year was 210th, but since then his progress has been slow and steady. By April, he had risen to 116th, broke back into the top 100 in a couple of weeks after that, rose to 70th in June, and by September had risen to the top 40.

He is now 35th in the world, and having made it to the quarterfinal of an event where he had been sent packing in the first round last year, will improve to at least 29th in the world.

Tsonga’s already won two titles this year, both indoors and victories over Andrey Rublev and Matteo Berrettini in this tournament would bode well for him. Not necessarily in this match in which he starts off as a rank outsider but for the new season where he will continue to push towards another solid season.
