In what has been her first Grand Slam since Williams returned to playing tennis, she overcome 11th seeded Julia Goerges in straight sets to make it to the round four. He triumphed 6-3 6-4.

This was after the two-time French Open champion Sharapova hadn’t broken into too much sweat sending Karolina Pliskova out 6-2 6-1 to enter the fourth round. Neither Williams, nor Sharapova required any longer than 75 minutes on the court.

What makes this match-up between Sharapoav and Williams a must-watch is not just their respective record and standing in their tennis career but also a history of feuds, resulting from their differing personalities. There have been various exchanges off the court between them but on it, the battle has always been one-sided and Williams has seldom struggled.

Their head to head record currently stands at 19-2 in favour of Williams, with Sharapova’s last win against the American having come in 2004. Even more telling is the fact that Sharapova hasn’t won a set against Williams since the 2013 Miami Masters, eight meetings ago.

Sharapova admitted she had a big issue on her hand:

“Any time you play against Serena you know what you’re up against.”

“You know the challenge that is upon you. You know, despite the record that I have against her, I always look forward to coming out on the court and competing against the best player.

“I think there is a lot of things in her game that she’s done much better than I have. Numbers don’t lie.”

Williams had recently said she was surprised by Sharapova’s autobiography and the fact its content had so much about the American. She called the book a hearsay.

This was in response to Sharapova’s mention of a former defeat of Williams after which the Russian claims to have seen her cry in the locker room.

Williams said:

“I think the book was 100% hearsay, which was a little bit disappointing. I have cried in the locker room many times after a loss, and that’s what I have seen a lot of people do.”

This fourth round Williams-Sharapova match will be played on Monday, June 4.
