Alexander Zverev v Denis Shapovalov Head to Head
The pair have met four times on the tour so far. The German leads the record 3-1. Shapovalov did win their most recent meeting at the indoor hard courts in Paris Masters last year.
Zverev Struggling for Form Ahead of Australian Open
22 year old has had a forgettable time in the tournament so far. After going down to the local boy De Minaur, he lost to Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets. The former junior world number one will have to bounce back quickly and find form ahead of the Australian Open.
At the end of 2018, he was the world number four and was seen as the player who could dethrone the big three from the top of the rankings. But issues off the field seem to be have been a reason in his loss of form. Last January he broke up with his agent, Patricio Apey which led to a legal battle.
His life long coach and his father also had to part ways with him due to bad health. He hired Ivan Lendl as his coach but he often failed to turn up to events and Zverev participated in a couple of tournaments without a coach.
This meant that compared to the nine titles that he won in 2017 & 2018, he could only manage a single trophy at Geneva last season. He did show glimpses of returning to form at the later stages of the yea. He reached the semi-finals at Beijing and then the finals at the Shanghai Masters.
Shapovalov Looking to Build on an Impressive 2019
The 20-year-old was recently named Tennis Canada’s top male player of 2019. An award that he claimed for the second time in the previous three years. After a mid-season slump, Shapovalov had a very strong finish to the year that has seen him reach the world number 15 in rankings.
He won his maiden ATP title at Stockholm in October and reached his first Masters final in Paris a month later. Shapovalov also reached the last four at the Miami Masters and led Team Canada to its first-ever appearance at the Davis Cup final.
He won the first match of the tournament against Tsitsipas before going down to De Minaur in a tough three-setter. He will be looking to continue to gain form ahead of the Australian Open where he will be eyeing to better his third-round appearance last year.
Alexander Zverev v Denis Shapovalov Predictions & Tips
On paper, Zverev looks to be the favourite for this match. He has got a great serve coming down from 6″6′ and a very potent game for the hard courts. But his slump in form should be a worry for him. On the other hand, Shapovalov has shown enough in the two matches in the tournament that he has enough form behind him to trouble the German. It is likely to be a close contest.
