Williams Makes Short Work of Giorgi
Top seed Serena Williams needed just over an hour to breeze past Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi in the Round of 32 in Auckland.
Playing her first singles match since the U.S. Open final defeat to Canadian Bianca Andreescu, the 38-year-old American showed no sign of rust as she put up a dominating performance to defeat the 28-year-old Italian 6-3, 6-2.
The hard-hitting Giorgi started on a bright note testing the World No. 10 with her powerful returns, but once the veteran saw off the early exchanges, she took control and eased into the match.
Serena, who began the new year with a straight sets doubles win with partner Carolina Wozniacki in the first round at Auckland, carried the momentum in singles against Giorgi and will look to continue dishing out such dominating performances in the run up to the Australian Open later this month, where she would look to equal Margaret Court’s singles Grand Slam record of 24 titles.
Next up for Serena will be compatriot Christina McHale, who defeated another American Ann Li in straight sets on Tuesday.
Tough Ask for McHale against a Champion
Having endured a tough first set against Li, McHale took charge in the second to advance with a 7-5, 6-2 win in 1 hour and 32 minutes.
But despite a solid display in the first round, McHale faces a huge task against the veteran in the next round. Predominantly a doubles player, McHale hasn’t had much of a success in singles over the last one year, winning just one ITF event, and will need to punch above her weight to cause an upset on Thursday.
Williams, meanwhile, will fancy her chances against the World No. 86 and a win could see her set up a quarterfinal clash against teen sensation Coco Gauff, who faces German Laura Siegemund in the next round.
