Serena Williams v Laura Siegemund Head to Head

The world number 10 Serena has played Siegemund in just one previous match and that was at the 2016 Indian Wells Open. Serena had easily won that 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the third round of the competition.

Williams Stretched to Three but Happy with Match Time

Williams began her 2020 campaign here in Auckland with a straightforward win over Camila Giorgi in her opening round match. She was expected to make short work of Christina McHale as well, starting out at 1/11 to win the match but the fellow American stretched her to the third set before Williams survived her opponent’s onslaught to come through. She won 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Needing two hours to win, Serena might not have enjoyed her lack of ruthlessness but she admitted it was the kind of match she needed to get closer to her goals. She said after the match it was important for her to get some time playing competitive matches in tournaments like these and a win at the end of it means she gets more of that.

After falling behind 4-1 in the first set, Serena showed signs of a spark in the first set itself and that momentum spilled over into the next two sets as well. As a result, Williams broke McHale five times, lost her own serve just once and made it through to the quarterfinals in the end.

Siegemund Surprise for Gauff

Most fans were aiming and hoping for an all-American, Serena-Cori Gauff semifinal, a match that one could only script. A legend of the game at one side and a 15-year-old, precocious talent on the other. That would have been a mouth-watering contest.

However, Siegemund had other ideas. She came back, in a similar manner as Serena, from down a set to win her contest against Gauff in three sets. The former world number 27 has had to overcome her knee issues in the past and struggled to retain some of her original flair as a result but on the day she was excellent with her variations of her rallies.

She had an early break in the first set and then went up another but Gauff fought back to level it and then took the opening set 7-5. This was followed by six breaks of serve in the second set including four for Siegemund before she wrapped it up in the third. Issue for Siegemund against Serena would be that serve as the 23-time Grand Slam winner will look to attack that and look for early breaks.

Serena Williams v Laura Siegemund Predictions & Tips

Serena Williams is a heavy favourite yet again against Siegemund. She should not have too many difficulties getting past her German opponent and we might even be looking at a straight-set win.
