Sofia Kenin v Viktorija Golubic Head to Head
The pair have never played each other. This will be the first meeting between the 21-year-old American, and her Swiss opponent six years her senior.
Kenin Looking to Build on 2019 Achievements
21 year old Kenin had a breakthrough year in 2019, winning three WTA singles titles – the Hobart International, the Mallorca Open, and the Guangzhou International Women’s Open. She also reached the final of the Mexican Open, and won doubles’ titles in Auckland and at the China Open.
With wins also over Ashleigh Barty, Naomi Osaka, and Serena Williams in the course of the season, she was propelled up the world rankings, and began this year 14 in the WTA standings.
Now she needs to consolidate and build on those gains in the season ahead. She won her first match of the year in Brisbane last week, defeating the Latvian Anastasia Sevastova, but was knocked out by Osaka in the second round, not before, however, taking the world number three to three sets.
Qualifier Golubic Looking for an Upset in Adelaide
Golubic, the 27 year old Swiss woman, is currently ranked 79 in the world, although she has been as high as 51. That, though, was nearly three years ago, and came after 2016 which was her most successful season on tour.
In that year she won her only WTA title to date, the Swiss Open, defeating Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, A few months after that she reached another final, the Linz Open in Austria, but was beaten by Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia on that occasion.
Her best result since then came in the junior WTA 125K series finals, winning the Indian Wells Challenger event, beating the American Jennifer Brady in the final last March.
Golubic failed to qualify for the Brisbane International last week, but earned her place in the main draw in Adelaide by beating Australian wildcard Alana Parnaby and Timea Babos of Hungary in the qualifying competition.
