Ashleigh Barty v Marketa Vondrousova Head to Head
The pair have played each other three times before, most notably in the final of the French Open last year, with Barty winning on each occasion. In fact, so far, the Czech woman has yet to claim a set off her Australian opponent.
Plenty of Room for Improvement for Barty
The world number one is amongst the favourites to win her “home” Grand Slam in Melbourne starting next week. If she is to do so, however, she is going to have to show better form in her singles matches than she has demonstrated so far this year.
After suffering a shock defeat in her opening match of the year last week in Brisbane, losing at the first time of asking to the American qualifier Jennifer Brady, the top seed had another major wobble in her second round match in Adelaide against the world number 31 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.
She dropped the opening set against the Russian but hit back to level, and at 5-2 in the third, seemed to have the match firmly in her grasp. Yet she let the lead slip, and had to dig deep to break the Pavlyuchenkova serve, before closing out the match.
Vondrousova Back from Injury with a Bang
The world number 16 missed the back end of last season after having surgery to correct the wrist injury she picked up when losing in the first round at Wimbledon.
If the evidence of her first two matches in Adelaide is anything to go by, she is determined to make up for lost time. In her first round match, she beat the lucky loser Tatjana Maria of Germany in straight sets, for the loss of just three games.
She was even more ruthless on Wednesday, thrashing the Australian qualifier, Arina Rodionova, conqueror of Sloane Stephens, 6-0, 6-0, taking less than an hour to see off the world 204.
Ashleigh Barty v Marketa Vondrousova Predictions & Tips
On paper, Barty is the clear favourite to win this match, because of her higher world ranking, and superior head-to-head record. However, she will need to be wary and guard against complacency. She has struggled in her singles matches so far this year, whilst Vondrousova, after her injury lay-off, is flying.
