Muguruza has Started 2020 in Impressive Form
After a disappointing 2019 where her win-loss record was just 23-18, the 26-year-old Spaniard has started the new season in fine form. After reaching the semi-finals at Shenzhen, she has found her way into the last eight at Hobart this week. She had to save a match point to see off an inspired Ons Jabeur in her second-round match. This is the first time she is playing in this tournament since 2014 when she was the winner.
For most of the period between 2015 to 2018, Muguruza was a constant top 10 player. She was even the world number one for a short period. During this time, she won five titles in total, two of which were Grand Slams.
Due to the below par season she had in 2019, her rankings have dropped to 34 at present. She would be hoping to repeat her 2014 success and carry this form into the first Grand Slam of the year.
Kudermetova Continuing Her 2019 Form in New Season
Kudermetova had a marathon 2019 season. She played 74 singles matches in total, the most by her since she turned pro. She also played 40 matches in the doubles category. As a result of the sheer number of matches she played, her rankings jumped from outside the top 100 at the start of 2019 to finishing 41 at the end.
Apart from her title at Guadalajara, she also reached three other semi-finals. In 2020 she won two matches in the qualifying rounds at Brisbane before losing to Marie Bouzkova and failing to enter the main draw. This week in Hobart, she has won both her matches in straight sets. She would be looking to improve her first-round appearance at the Australian Open that she achieved last year.
