Karolina Pliskova v Kristina Mladenovic Head to Head
Over the last two years, they haven’t played even once but overall, Pliskova and Mladenovic have met six times, of which four matches were completed. Both players won two of those with Mladenovic winning the last time they played in 2017 at the Dubai Open and in straight sets too.
Pliskova Gunning for Her First Grand Slam Win
Pliskova, a world number one not so long ago and now ranked second in the world, started off the season with a title win in Brisbane. After a first round bye, she went through three, hard-fought matches in which Pliskova defeated Ajla Tomljanovic, Naomi Osaka and Madison Keys to go on to lift the title.
And that made it the 16th WTA tournament win of her career, and fifth since the start of 2019 but with no Grand Slam wins so far, the wait has been rather long. And with some of the top players gunning for the title yet again this time including Serena Williams, Pliskova will have a stiff ask in front of her.
That begins with her opening round encounter against a player who has done excellently in the doubles circuit but also a former world number 10 on the singles tour. On paper, Pliskova should have all her bases covered here but as opponents go, Mladenovic wouldn’t be straightforward one.
Mladenovic Looking to Improve Australian Open Record
In the three Australian Open editions in the lead-up to this one, Mladenovic has been sent out in the first round every time. She did make round three of the 2016 Australian Open but her record has tapered off since making the third round at 2018 Wimbledon.
The focus on doubles tennis has obviously been a factor, and fair play to the French player who was the losing finalist last Australian Open and the title winner at the French Open in the doubles draw. Her singles record in 2019 wasn’t that worrying either.
Mladenovic made the semifinal at Moscow and Zhengzhou, and as a qualifier, she was a quarterfinalist in Rome as well. All of that, however, pales in front of her struggles against most of the top player at Grand Slam tennis. This could be another one of those.

Battle-hardened Pliskova should romp to an easy win over Mladenovic here unless the French woman can dig deep and try and bring out her best singles form, which hasn’t really been on display for a while.
