Matteo Berrettini v Andrew Harris Head to Head
It will be a first career meeting between these two players.
Berrettini Poised to Pick Up His First Win on Melbourne Park
What a difference a year can make. Matteo Berrettini was very much an unknown commodity at the start of 2019 not just to the tennis world, but in his native Italy too. The 23-year-old was ranked outside the world’s top-50 at this time last year and had never made it to the second week of a Grand Slam.
And remarkably, he had also never won a main draw match at the Australian Open.
Berrettini still hasn’t won in Melbourne, losing in the first round in each of the last two editions, but that odd statistic will most certainly change on Monday when he opens up his campaign against a wildcard at the first major of the year.
The Italian will arrive in Australia with an aura of invincibility, sitting at a career-high ranking of World No.8 after a spectacular 2019 season in which he garnered two ATP titles and memorably reached the semifinals of the US Open, becoming the first Italian man to reach the last four at Flushing Meadows in over four decades.
Berrettini – who was voted as the Most Improved Player of the Year – compiled a 43-25 win-loss record last year and qualified at the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals for the first time. He did not compete at the ATP Cup, citing abdominal injury which bothered him since the closing stages of 2019.
Harris Will Make Grand Slam Singles Debut
Andrew Harris may be two years Berrettini’s senior, but he lags far behind when it comes to tennis accomplishments.
Harris, who hails from Melbourne, and is definitely guaranteed majority of home support on Monday, will make his Grand Slam singles debut after being granted a wildcard.
The 25-year-old has largely competed at Challenger and ITF events, painstakingly building up his ranking. He is currently ranked at No.162, just three spots down from his previous highest-ranking of No.159 which he attained in November last year, shortly after reaching the final of the Traralgon Challenger in Australia.
Matteo Berrettini v Andrew Harris Predictions & Tips
Berrettini hasn’t played a match since beating Dominic Thiem in a dead rubber at the ATP Finals last November, so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if he does drop a set here. Assuming he is fully recovered from the abdominal strain that kept him out of the ATP Cup, he should be able to finally break his duck at Melbourne park against the wildcard.
Tip: Berrettini to win in four sets: 11/4 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
