Petra Martić v Christina McHale Head to Head
This will be the third meeting between the pair. Both the players have won one match each. McHale won their first-ever meeting almost six years ago at Montreal. Martić, on the other, won the second time around at Cincinnati in 2017.
Martić Enjoying Her Highest-Ever Ranking
A couple of years ago, the Croatian was not sure that she would be able to play competitive tennis again. She had a terrible run of injuries from 2013 to 2016. In 2017, upon her comeback, she was ranked number 659 in the world and had to go through qualifying rounds for an ITF $25000 event.
But her determination and hard work have meant that currently she is the world number 14 and has her maiden title at Istanbul last year. Her win-loss record for the previous three seasons is an extremely impressive 103-47. She also made it to the quarter-finals at the French Open last year, making it her best-ever showing at a Grand Slam.
This will be her ninth appearance in the main draw in Melbourne. Her best showing so far has been the round of 16 runs she achieved in 2018.
Tough Start to the Season for McHale
The 27-year-old American has won three matches so far in the new season. But both the times she lost, she came up against opponents much higher than her in rankings. In the second round at Auckland, she ran into Serena Williams, whereas in Hobart, she came up against Elise Mertens.
Currently ranked number 84 in the world, the American has seen much better days on tour. She was a constant top 50 player for the best part of 2011 to 2016, with her highest ever ranking being at 24. Her only title came in 2016 in Tokyo.
This will be her tenth appearance at the Australian Open with her third-round appearance in 2012 being her best run at the event.
