Sofia Kenin v Ann Li Head to Head
The pair have met only once so far on tour. On that occasion back in 2018, Kenin won in straight sets on the hard courts of Miami.
Straight Sets Victory for Kenin in the Opening Round
The 21-year-old American won in straight sets against the world number Martina Trevisan of Italy. The victory would surely give Kenin a lot of confidence, because she had suffered a couple of second-round defeats in tournaments before the Australian Open.
Last year was a very successful one for Kenin. She won three titles, Guangzhou, Mallorca, and Hobart, along with a very impressive win-loss record of 49-23. This resulted in her rankings jumping from outside of the top 50 at the start of the season to 12 by the end of it.
The only disappointment for her would have been her performances in the home tournaments. Out of the six tournaments she played in the US last season, Cincinnati was the only one where she tasted relative success. She reached the semi-finals at the event but failed to go past the third round in all of the remaining.
Qualifier Li on an Impressive Run
The world number 142 is on a solid run at the start of the new season. She won three qualifying matches to reach the main draw at the Auckland Open a couple of weeks ago. She has now repeated her feat to enter the Australian Open main draw.
This will also be her maiden Grand Slam main draw appearance after unsuccessfully failing four times over the last three years in the qualifying stages.
In the first round in Melbourne, she overcame local player Cabrera Lizette in a tough match. She is also a former junior Wimbledon singles finalist from 2017. Regardless of the result in the second round, she is likely to reach close to breaking the top 100 in the rankings very soon.

Qualifier Li has done a remarkable job of reaching the second round. But beating world number 15 will too difficult a task for her. Kenin played very well in the first match and seemed to have found her rhythm again. It is going to be another straight forward win for Kenin.
