Time for Berrettini to Prove He Isn’t a One Season Wonder
Its been a whirlwind one year between the last Australian Open to this one for the Italian. It wasn’t big news for anyone when he went out in the opening round in Melbourne last year. He was an upcoming talent from Italy, outside of the top 50 in rankings. This year he ought to prove everyone that his amazing 2019 wasn’t a flash in the pan but an indication of things to come for many years.
Post-Australian Open last year, he reached three finals, winning two titles from them and reached another five semi-finals. One of which was at the US Open, where he went down to the eventual champion Rafael Nadal. He has broken into the top 10 in the world and is talked about as one of the first time Grand Slam winners this year.
He got through to the second round very comfortably beating local player Andrew Harris in straight sets. With no points to defend from this round onwards, the 23-year-old will be hoping to go deep in the tournament and collect vital points along the way.

But a year later, he had a fantastic run at the Australian Open where he reached the last eight out of nowhere. He beat Stan Wawrinka, Dominic Thiem, and Jeremy Chardy along the way. Last year he won his maiden title on the tour at Auckland as well. Currently ranked 100 in the world, he was as high as 41 at the start of last season.
This week he beat Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak in straight sets to reach the second round. Even though he starts as an underdog, he will be hopeful of pulling off an upset.
