Bertens, Looking to Improve Poor Record in Melbourne
World number ten Bertens had a successful 2019, reaching five finals, and winning two of them – the St. Petersburg Ladies’ Trophy and the Madrid Open, both of which are Premier events. She also reached the finals of two other Premier tournaments, in China and Italy. Yet, despite that, she had a relatively poor record in Grand Slams, with third round appearances at Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows the best she could manage.
She has a particularly disappointing record in Melbourne, and has only been to the third round stage once before, two years ago.
Bertens reached the semi-finals in Brisbane two weeks ago, losing to Naomi Osaka in three sets, and showed glimpses of that form in her first round match with the Romanian Irina Begu, beating the world 105 in straight sets.
Rodionova, Australian Wildcard
The 30-year old Russian born Australian is currently ranked 203 in the world, and owes her place in the main draw here to a wildcard. She is best known on the senior circuit as a doubles player, and reached the quarter-final of the women’s event four years ago. In terms of singles, her main success has come on the junior ITF circuit, where she has won 9 titles, although it has been nearly two years since her last success.
Last week in Adelaide, where was also given a wildcard she pulled off a surprise, beating the former US Open winner Sloane Stephens, before losing to Marketa Vondrousova.
She earned her place in the second round after battling to beat the Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko in three sets on Tuesday.

Although Bertens does not have a good record in Melbourne, she is likely to have too many weapons at her disposal for a woman who has little history of success in singles on the senior tour. As a local player, Rodionova will have the crowd behind her, but that is not going to be enough to beat Bertens.
