David Goffin v Pierre-Hugues Herbert Head to Head
The pair have played each other three times before, with Goffin having won on each of those occasions, most recently on the grass of s-Hertogenbosch last June. The other two matches came on 2017 Rotterdam’s indoor court and 2018 Washington Open’s hard court surface and Herbert has won just one set so far.
Goffin, Confident Start in Melbourne
Goffin is looking to continue his career revival that began last year with his appearance in the final of the Cincinnati Masters and his first appearance in a Wimbledon quarter-final.
He had already shown signs of that renewed form and confidence this year, playing for Belgium in the ATP Cup, where he distinguished himself, particularly when he beat the world number one, Rafael Nadal, in straight sets in their quarter-final tie.
If the evidence of his first round match against Jeremy Chardy is anything to go by, the man who reached the quarter-final here in 2017 has a good chance of emulating that feat. He beat the experienced Frenchman comfortably in straight sets.
Herbert, Defending Doubles Champion
28 year old Herbert is much better known as a doubles player. He has won 17 career titles, most of them with regular partner Nicolas Mahut. Together the pair have completed the set of Grand Slam titles, including victory in the event here last year.
In terms of singles, he reached a career high of 36 last February, but has since slipped back some 30 places in the rankings after an indifferent run of results in the latter part of 2019.
He has been twice to the third round in Melbourne, in 2016 and again last year, and demonstrated all his fighting abilities in his first round match on Tuesday with Britain’s Cameron Norrie, coming from two sets to one down to eventually triumph in a match that lasted nearly four hours.
David Goffin v Pierre-Hugues Herbert Predictions & Tips
Goffin is the overwhelming favourite to win this match. He has won all three of their previous encounters, and is playing a man much more at home on a doubles court. In addition, Herbert went to five sets to win his first round match, whilst Goffin breezed through his encounter.
Tip: Goffin to win in straight sets: 8/13 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
