For now, the 29-year-old might be holding for a potential fourth round match against Serena Williams for a fitting swan-song, but maybe her Tunisian opponent on Friday could have a telling contribution.
Can Jabeur Send Wozniacki To Retirement?
Ons Jabeur has knocked out two former top-10 players to equal her best appearance at a Grand Slam. She has now reached the third round in three of the four majors, with only Wimbledon missing from that list.
Jabeur has made the main draw of the Australian Open three times before this year, but she had never won match until her surprise straight sets victory over Great Britain’s Johanna Konta on Tuesday.
The Tunisian is an inspiration not just in her country but across the Arab world, where she has established herself as the most successful female player in those territories. When she beat Dominika Cibulkova – who was ranked at No.7 – at the 2017 French Open, she became the first Arab woman to reach the third round of a Grand Slam.
Jabeur replicated that feat at last year’s US Open, and now at the Australian Open.
