Alison Riske v Julia Goerges Head to Head
This will be the fourth meeting between the pair. Goerges leads the tally at 2-1.
Second Lease of Life for Riske’s Career
The American’s best time on the WTA tour came from 2014 to 2016. She came to limelight in 2013 after beating Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova at the US Open. The following year she won her first WTA title and reached the top 50 in the rankings. In 2016, she reached three WTA finals. But her record since then had been below average.
From the start of 2017 till the French Open last year, her win-loss record was 61-62, with no WTA titles to her name. But her fortunes seem to have changed since her Surbiton ITF title. She won her second WTA title at Hertogenbosch and had an amazing run at the Wimbledon, where she beat Donna Vekic, Belinda Bencic, and Ashleigh Barty. She also reached the final at the Wuhan Open at the end of the year. Due to this, she achieved her career-high ranking of 18 last November.
Appearing in her ninth Australian Open, Riske has already equaled her best-ever showing at the event.
Goerges Coming off a Huge Victory Over Petra Martic
Appearing in the main draw at the Australian Open for the 12th straight time, Goerges upset the world number 14 Martic in the second round. One more victory here would equal her best showing at the tournament. Goerges has played more than 800 matches in her career and won seven WTA titles.
She has been a late bloomer and has enjoyed the best results of her career in the last three years. Five out of her seven titles have come since 2017, a time in which she broke into the top ten rankings and reached the Wimbledon semifinals in 2018.
At the start of the 2020 season, she failed to defend her Auckland Open title. This resulted in her ranking dropping to 38, lowest since 2016.
