Elina Svitolina v Garbine Muguruza Head to Head
The pair have played each other ten times before, with Svitolina leading their head to head series by six matches to four. Three of those meetings came last year, with Svitolina winning in Dubai and at the French Open, and Muguruza triumphing in Wuhan.
Svitolina, Looking for First Grand Slam Final
The winner of the 2018 WTA Finals, Svitolina is looking to reach a Grand Slam final for the first time, having been a semi-finalist at both Wimbledon and Flushing Meadows last year. She has also reached the quarter finals here in the past two years.
2019 was not her best year on tour – she failed to add to her career haul of 13 WTA titles, and her only final of the year was her unsuccessful defence of her WTA Finals crown in Singapore, where she lost to Ashleigh Barty.
She had a poor start to the year, thrashed by Danielle Collins of the USA in Brisbane, but she has re-discovered some form this week, without, at the same time, being totally convincing. First she beat Katie Boulter of Great Britain, and then, on Thursday, saw off the challenge of the American Lauren Davis, but not until the world number 62 had taken her to a second set tie break.
Muguruza Continues to Improve
Muguruza is a two-time Grand Slam winner, having won the French Open in 2016, and Wimbledon a year later. She was also a beaten finalist at Wimbledon in 2015, and a former world number one.
However, her form in the past two years has been very patchy, and her win in Monterrey last April, her 7th WTA title, was a highlight in what otherwise was a disappointing 2019 for the Spaniard.
As a consequence of that poor form, she began this tournament ranked outside the top thirty for the first time in a number of years.
A quarter-finalist here in 2017, her progress to the third round has been by no means easy. Pitted against the American qualifier Shelby Rogers in the first round, she dropped the first set to love to the world 158, before rousing herself and dominating the next two sets, dropping just one game in the process.
That earned her a second round tie against local favourite Ajla Tomljanovic, and again she had a fight on her hands, eventually prevailing in three sets in a match that lasted almost two and a half hours.
Elina Svitolina v Garbine Muguruza Predictions & Tips
Whilst neither woman is in the best of form, Svitolina will start as favourite against an opponent who has suffered something of a decline in recent years. It may, in the end, come down to fitness. Muguruza has already played six sets this week, whereas Svitolina has yet to be fully tested.
