Qiang Wang v Ons Jabeur Head to Head
The pair have met twice before, at Dubai in 2017 and in Shenzen a few weeks ago, and Wang won on both occasions easily in straight sets.
Wang, Conqueror of Serena Williams
Wang reached a career high of 12 in the world last September, after a run to the quarter finals at the US Open, her best performance in a Grand Slam to date, although she was then thrashed by Serena Williams.
The winner of two WTA titles in 2018 both in her native China, in Jiangxi, and Guangzhou, Wang had not been in the best of form coming into Melbourne, losing in the quarter-finals in Shenzen, and the first round in Adelaide, beaten by Angelique Kerber.
However, she beat two Frenchwomen, Pauline Parmentier and Fiona Ferro, both in straights sets, to make the third round and a re-match with Williams. And she got her revenge for that heavy defeat in Flushing Meadows, knocking out the number eight seed, and four times champion, in three sets. It was a win that would have given a player like Qiang lot of confidence given what had transpired in their previous meeting – it was a turnaround of epic proportions.
Jabeur Brought Down the Curtain on Wozniacki Career
For the 25 year old Tunisian this is now completely uncharted territory – she has never been beyond the second round at any Grand Slam event in her career before. In fact, she has relatively little experience on the senior WTA tour, despite losing the final of the Kremlin Cup in 2018, being better known on the junior ITF tour.
Yet the world number 78 has belied that comparative lack of experience, with a series of confident wins, beginning with a straight sets defeat of the number 12 seed, Johanna Konta of Great Britain on Tuesday. She then beat another former top ten player, Caroline Garcia, coming from a set down to beat the Frenchwoman.
And then, in what became an emotional occasion n Friday, she brought an end to the career of the former world number one and 2018 champion, Caroline Wozniacki, handing the Dane a three set defeat in her last match before retirement.
Qiang Wang v Ons Jabeur Predictions & Tips
Based on the fact that they only met a few weeks ago in Shenzen and Wang won easily, she must start clear favourite against the North African woman who is so inexperienced at this level. Whilst hardly a veteran of Grand Slams herself, Wang should make her second quarter-final in six months.
Tip: Wang to win in straight sets: 6/4 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
