Simona Halep and Garbine Muguruza booked their Australian Open 2020 semifinal slots with straight-set wins over their respective opponents on Wednesday.

Romania’s Halep spent just 53 minutes on court to breeze past Anett Kontaveit in her quarterfinal on Wednesday, winning it 6-1, 6-1 to advance to the last four.

And she will now be up against Spain’s Muguruza who was stretched for a bit before coming through 7-5, 6-3 against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in her quarterfinal.

Having not dropped a set this entire tournament, the Romanian world number three had gone into her match as an overwhelming favourite but not too many expected her to run away with the match the way she did. It was a stunning performance from Halep, who won 11 games in a row from 0-1 down to shut out her opponent.

Muguruza, on the other hand, has had her worries throughout the tournament. For one, her form hasn’t been the greatest over the past season or so and she started off slightly unwell at this Australian Open as well.

It needed her three sets apiece to overcome Shelby Rogers and Ajla Tomljanovic in her first two rounds but since then, Muguruza has been head and shoulders above her opponents. Elina Svitolina and Kiki Bertens have been higher-ranked opponents but both didn’t win a set and then Muguruza came away with not a lot of trouble against Pavlyuchenkova either.

The Spaniard blasted 21 winners to go with her six aces to win her match in 93 minutes.

It should be an interesting match up between Halep and Muguruza, who have both won two Grand Slam titles, with having lifted Wimbledon and French Open. They have also faced off five times in the past, with Muguruza having won three of those but the last time they played it was Halep who came away on top at the French Open 2018.

The other semifinal will see Ash Barty play Sofia Kenin for a place in the final.
