Diego Schwartzman v Jaume Munar Head to Head

The pair have met once before, in the second round of the US Open in 2018, Schwartzman winning a second round match in four sets.

Schwartzman Back in Front of His Local Fans

Schwartzman, now ranked 14 in the world, grew up on clay courts, and, when he was playing on the junior circuits, all of his success came on that surface. Since he has graduated to the senior ATP tour, he has worked hard on his game, and has become more of an all-court player, as evidenced by the fact that he won the third of his ATP titles on the hard courts of Los Cabos Mexico, last August.

Still, given the choice, his preference is clay – both of his other titles, Brazil in 2018 and Istanbul in 2016 were clay court tournaments.

He began his year playing for Argentina in the ATP Cup where, in the group phase, he suffered a surprise defeat to Hubert Hurkasz of Poland, and was beaten by Dominic Thiem of Austria, before bouncing back to beat the Croat Borna Coric. He was then beaten by Daniil Medvedev of Russia in their quarter-final tie.

He then went on to Melbourne where he made the fourth round for the second time, only to be drawn against the eventual winner Novak Djokovic, losing to the Serb in straight sets.

Munar Playing on His Favoured Surface

Munar was a beaten French Open finalist in singles, and won the doubles at Roland Garros as a junior, and it is no surprise that he is happiest on a clay court.

All but two of his finals on the junior tours, and both of the two he contested in 2019 were on that surface – the Challenger event in Seville where he lost to fellow Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, and the tournament in Montevideo, Uruguay, two months later, which he won, beating another Argentine, Federico Delbonis in the final.

2020 may be still quite young, but Munar has already played a lot of tennis, beginning with the Challenger event in Canberra where he got to the quarter finals. He failed to qualify for the Adelaide Open, but gained entry to the main draw as a lucky loser, only to lose to compatriot Albert Ramos Vinolas in the first round.

However, he did reach the second round of the Australian Open, beating the wildcard Hugo Gaston of France, before his run was ended by the local man Alexei Popyrin of Australia.

Cordoba is his first clay court tournament of the year, and he got off  to a good start here by defeating Leonardo Mayer of Argentina in front of his home fans in straight sets in their first round match on Tuesday night.

Diego Schwartzman v Jaume Munar Predictions & Tips

Schwartzman, in front of a partisan local crowd, will be the heavy favourite to win this match. Munar is a clay court specialist but so in the Argentine, and he has the superior all-round game.

Tip: Schwartman to win in straight sets: 8/11 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
