James Duckworth v Egor Gerasimov Head to Head

The pair have played each other before in Kolkata in 2015, Duckworth winning in straight sets.

Duckworth Enjoys Playing in India

Like most of the field in Pune this year, Duckworth has never won a senior ATP title, although along with partner Chris Guccione, he did reach the final of the Brisbane Open doubles in January 2016.

However, he has enjoyed a fair degree of success on the Challenger tour, winning four titles last year, including one in this same city three months ago.

There seems to be something about playing in India which appeals to him, as he seems to be enjoying his time at the Maharashtra Open. He began his campaign in Pune with a straight sets win over the German Peter Gojowczyk, and then had a fierce battle with the Japanese player Taro Daniel, with the pair swapping sets that were won on a tie break, until Duckworth forced the vital break in the third which he consolidated to win the match.

His quarter final with the Italian Roberto Marcore had some similarities, except that, in this case Duckworth secured the decisive service break in the first set, and then won the second on a tie break.

Gerasimov Battled Past Number Four Seed

Having been a professional for almost a decade, it took Gerasimov until last September to make his first ATP semi-final in St. Petersburg. Now, less than five months later in Pune, he has reached his second.

Whilst his first round match was straightforward, a straight sets win over the Italian Paolo Lorenzi, the challenges have got harder the deeper he has gone into the tournament.  First, the Serb Nikola Milojevic, the world 148, took the first set off him in their second round match, before Gerasimov was stirred into action and fought back to take the next two.

Then the number four seed Kwon Soon-woo, took the first set of him and had chances to break in the second, until Gerasimov levelled the match on a tie-break. A solitary break of serve in the third set was enough to decide the match after two hours and 24 minutes.

James Duckworth v Egor Gerasimov Predictions & Tips

Whilst there is little to choose between these two, Duckworth did win their previous encounter, and appears to like playing in India. That makes him the slight favourite of two men who are bidding to make their first senior ATP final.
