Kiki Bertens v Aryna Sabalenka Head to Head
This is an interesting rivalry with six previous matches having yielded four wins for Bertens and two for Sabalenka. However – and this is what makes it interesting – the two wins for Sabalenka came in their previous two matches, with the Belarusian winning at both, the 2019 WTA Elite and Wuhan Open in straight sets. There were two other encounters between these two in 2019 itself and Bertens had won both those.
Bertens Stretched but Won Opener
Bertens was stretched by Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first match of their Fed Cup tie but gave Netherlands the lead with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 win. Sasnovich did a lot of running around in the first set but once the Dutchwoman had a measure of her, she managed to carve out an easy win over the next two sets.
It’s been curious start to the season for Bertens. She made the quarterfinals in Brisbane where she had her chances in a three-set defeat at the hands of Naomi Osaka. And then there were three straightforward, straight-set wins at the Australian Open before Garbine Muguruza blew her off the court as well.
Now she faces another challenge against an opponent who has shown sparks of brilliance at various times, and is a former world number nine gunning to make that move forward.
Sabalenka Had an Easy Workout
Sabalenka needed just 74 minutes on court to destroy Arantxa Rus in the second match of this tie, winning 6-2, 6-3. She was broken just once in the entire match, and did well on her winners, smashing 32 of them.
Where Sabalenka might have to change things around is her unforced errors, which mounted up to 28. While Rus wasn’t able to challenge her too much things might be different against a top-10 player like Bertens.
Dealing with a personal tragedy during the break between the seasons, Sabalenka had earlier started off with a semifinal at Adelaide but a first round loss at the Australian Open would have hard to take. She has now started off well in the Fed Cup but the real test comes now.
Kiki Bertens v Aryna Sabalenka Predictions & Tips
Bertens is a narrower favourite than the odds of 4/7 which are on offer, which is probably why Sabalenka’s 5/4 look more tempting at the moment. Even better is a three-set win for Sabalenka.
Tip: Sabalenka to win in three sets: 4/1 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
