Sofia Kenin v Jelena Ostapenko Head to Head
This will be the first time the seventh-ranked Kenin will be facing off against the 40th-ranked Ostapenko at this level.
Kenin on a Solid High
If anyone had any doubts over Kenin’s performance in her first match since the Australian Open, they were quickly dispelled by her performance in the first match of this tie. Kenin, fresh from her Australian Open title win showed no signs of rustiness and demolished Anastasija Sevastova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Kenin won four breaks of serve, lost none of her services and faced just one break-point all match. She hit 26 winners and while her unforced error count of 19 might not please her too much, it was still 14 lower than her opponent.
While it must be said Kenin was playing against an opponent struggling to find her groove this year – Sevastova has now lost all her four matches played this year – it’s safe to say the American is playing at a different level at the moment. She is on a high and on a solid one at that.
Ostapenko Did Well But Lost to Serena
Most players would take 6-7, 6-7 defeat to Serena Williams but what would disappoint Ostapenko is she had her chances in the match. There were multiple occasions where it looked like she could have gone the distance with the match at the very least or even shocked the 23-time Grand Slam winner but in the end, Serena’s play on vital points became the difference.
After all, Ostapenko won a total of just three points lesser than Serena in the entire match, and earning as many breaks as Serena.
While it still counted as a defeat for Ostapenko and Latvia, and she is still 1-2 on win-loss this year, she would give herself a decent chance going into this match and into the rest of the season. In fact, with some luck she might be able to test Kenin in this one too.
Sofia Kenin v Jelena Ostapenko Predictions & Tips
Kenin is a whopping 1/3 to win this to Ostapenko’s 9/4 but the difference between the two players might not be so vast. We could see a lot closer encounter and one which probably goes to a tie-breaker or even to a third set.
