David Goffin v Robin Haase Head to Head
They have a long rivalry having played each other seven times between 2013 and 2018. Haase’s only win over Goffin came on the clay court of Gstaad with the Belgian having won the remaining six times including thrice on hard courts and once at Rotterdam in a three-setter.
Goffin Hoping to Convert His Starts
The 10th-ranked Belgian is 7-3 on win-loss this season but he will want to do a lot more than the semifinal he reached at Montpellier last week. He would have gone into that match knowing he is a favourite and should have won the match in the final set but Vasek Pospisil clearly used his experience rather well.
Even at the Australian Open, Goffin was a set up against Andrey Rublev but went down in four sets, having come into that first Grand Slam of the year on the back of a fine ATP Cup performance. Now his team might not have made the semifinal there but to beat Grigor Dimitrov and Rafael Nadal in back to back matches was a special showing.
Goffin did have a great time indoors last year, which included a first round defeat at the hands of Gael Monfils in Rotterdam. He made the semifinal at Marseille but ended 2019 with a 4-8 win-loss on this surface. Can he turn things around?

Haase’s Fallen off the Ranking Charts
32-year-old Haase’s last title came in 2012, and even at the lower levels, at Challengers, he hasn’t won once since 2016. This year he came close at the Bangkok Challenger as he made it to the final with four, back to back straight-set wins but lost to Federico Gaio in the title-decider.
What the 163rd-ranked Haase then did was try and qualify for the main draw at the Pune Open but went out before making the main draw, leaving him with the wild-card for this home event.
Having struggled indoors all his career – he is 11-17 over the last three seasons – it looks like things could get very difficult for Haase against an opponent like Goffin. His best hope would be try and push Goffin into the third set but that’s about where he might get from this one.
