Felix Auger-Aliassime v Jan-Lennard Struff Head to Head

This will be the second time Auger-Aliassime and Struff will be facing off, having done that for the first time only as recently as the 2020 ATP Cup. Struff strung out a straight-set win over Auger-Aliassime in that one.

Horrendous Start for Auger-Aliassime

10 matches played and just four won this season, that’s how badly things have gone for the 21st-ranked Auger-Aliassime this season. There was a semifinal appearance at the Adelaide International after he got a first round bye but that has been preceded and followed by some shocking showing.

At the ATP Cup, Auger-Aliassime won his opening match against a player who had gone into the encounter with 8/1 odds for him, and followed on to lose the next three matches. A first round defeat at the Australian Open to qualifier Ernests Gulbis and a second round ouster at Montpellier makes it a tough initiation to 2020 for the Canadian.

The trouble isn’t restricted to 2020 alone. After a rollicking start to the previous season, Auger-Aliassime went through a string of eight matches at the end of 2019 where he won just two. At some point, Auger-Aliassime will need to start stringing together wins and no better place than trying to get past a tough first round opponent…

Struff Close to His Best Ranking

Struff hasn’t played since his first round exit and his start to the season hasn’t been the best either but he has been a much improved player. Towards the end of the previous season, he had made the third round at the Paris Masters, following the quarterfinal at Basel. There were two other semifinals last year too, at Stuttgart and Auckland.

This year, Struff won a couple of matches in the ATP Cup including that win against Auger-Aliassime, but then came two early defeats. At Adelaide he would have thought he had a good chance to pushing through to the latter rounds but lost to Alex Bolt in the second round and then had the misfortune of facing Novak Djokovic in the first round.

Struff will take heart from the fact apart from the final, Djokovic dropped the only set of the tournament to Struff.

Felix Auger-Aliassime v Jan-Lennard Struff Predictions & Tips

While Auger-Aliassime is 13 places ahead of Struff on the ATP rankings, and while neither player has done anything too sparkling this year so far, the latter starts a favourite here. Struff is 4/6 to win this as compared to 11/10 for his opponent and we will have to go with the German here.
