Qiang Wang v Katarzyna Kawa Head to Head
This will be a first ever meeting between these two players.
Wang One of the Favorites to Clinch Title This Week
Qiang Wang, the number three seed this week, begun her bid for a first title at the Hua Hin Championships with an emphatic 6-1 6-1 win against compatriot Han Xinyun, which took just 61 minutes. The World No.27 broke serve five times and was relentless on her opponent’s second serve.
Following a surprise defeat of the number two seed Petra Martic of Croatia, Wang along with the 2017 champion Elina Svitolina are in the ascendancy to walk away with the title this weekend.
The Chinese No.1 has been in brilliant form to start 2020. She reached the quarterfinals of Shenzhen in the opening week of the year and then made the second week of the Australian Open for the first time in her career, upsetting the 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams in the third round.
Wang spent majority of last season ranked inside the top-20, and peaked at career-high ranking of World No.12 last September. But after a poor Asian swing in which she failed to defend her title in Guangzhou compounded with early exits in Hong Kong and Zhuhai, she lost a huge chunk of ranking points and dropped as low as No.30 to end 2019.
Kawa Surprised Many On Her Main Draw Debut in 2019
Katarzyna Kawa is not the most popular name in tennis, and that is largely due to her limited appearances on the senior tour. The 27-year-old from Poland has spent nearly ten years on the ITF circuit, painstakingly building up her ranking, hence her debut appearance at the Baltic Open last summer went unnoticed.
Kawa’s maiden main draw appearance at WTA level was one to remember as she stormed through the draw as a qualifier and went all the way to the final at the Latvian coast of Jurmala. There she met Latvia’a very own Anastasija Sevastova, whom she led by a set and a break before nerves kicked in.
The Pole eventually lost in three sets to her experienced opponent, but that run in Latvia pushed her to a new career-high ranking of No.128. Although she won just one tour-level match between that week until the end of the season, she will certainly cherish another appearance in a main draw this week.
Qiang Wang v Katarzyna Kawa Predictions & Tips
Wang made light work of her first round opponent with some brutal hitting from the baseline. Kawa might try and match the Chinese in that department as she also can hit a flat ball off either wing. But Wang has so much variety in her game right now, including the ability to turn defense into attack whilst under pressure.
