Petra Kvitova v Alison Van Uytvanck Head to Head
The two have never met on the tour before.
Kvitova Looking to Carry Her January Momentum
Having reached the semifinals in Brisbane, and the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, Petra Kvitova can safely say that the first month of the New Year has been pretty satisfactory. She would be looking to carry that momentum to St Petersburg, aiming for an even better finish. And there is little doubt that the two-time Wimbledon champion is one of the top contenders for the title.
Ever since making her comeback in 2017 following the horrific knife attack the preceding year, Kvitova has been one of the most consistent players on tour. The 6-foot tall left-hander won five titles in 2018, including the one at St. Petersburg on debut.
The 29-year-old continued to thrive in 2019, winning two titles (in Sydney and Stuttgart) and finishing runner-up at the Australian Open and the Dubai Championship. However, Kvitova couldn’t progress beyond the quarterfinals in St. Petersburg, where she was beaten by Donna Vekic.
Back in Russia for the third consecutive year, Kvitova, who got a first round bye, will have her eyes firmly fixed on the ultimate prize as she begins her campaign against Van Uytvanck on Thursday.
Van Uytvanck Gets Her First Win in 2020
The 25-year-old Belgian who has been struggling with her singles form off late notched her first win of 2020 on Tuesday as she breezed past France’s Kristina Mladenovic 6-4, 6-1. The win also brought an end to Van Uytvanck’s five-match losing streak that went back to the Linz Open in October.
The right-handed Van Uytvanck, who won two of her four WTA titles last year (in Budapest and Tashkent), needed just an hour and 18 minutes to improve to 3-0 against the French opponent, who won the title in St Petersburg in 2017.
The World No. 47 saved only two of four break points, but converted all six of her break point opportunities.
Having trounced the 2020 Australian Open doubles champion in straight sets, Van Uytvanck has made her intentions clear and come Thursday she will be asking some tough questions of Kvitova.
