Borna Coric v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head
The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 23 year old Croat, and the Brazilian, two years his senior.
Coric, In Poor Recent Form
Coric has slipped outside the world’s top 30 after injury impaired his progress in 2019. The winner of two ATP titles, and the Davis Cup with Croatia in 2018, missed much of the middle part of last season with a back problem but, when he returned to competitive action, he reached the final of the St. Petersburg Open, before losing to Daniil Medvedev.
However, he had a poor end to the season, suffering a string of first round defeats, and 2020 has not gone well for him so far either.
Playing for his country in the ATP Cup, he lost to Diego Schwartzman of Argentina, and Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, before claiming a morale boosting win over Dominic Thiem. He was then beaten by Grigor Dimitrov in an exhibition match in Kooyung, Australia, and lost in the first round in Melbourne by Sam Querry of the United States in straight sets.
Monteiro, Brazilian Number One
Monteiro is currently the number one Brazilian player and the world ranked 92. He has never won a senior ATP title, but has won five events on the Challenger tour, including three in 2019, in Punta del Este, Uruguay, Sparkassen in Germany, and Lima, in Peru.
And he has already enjoyed success in 2020, successfully defending his title in Uruguay last month.
This is his fifth event of the year. He began his season in Auckland, where he got to the second round before losing to Benoit Paire of France. He was knocked out in the first round of the Australian Open, beaten by John Isner in four sets, before travelling back to Punta del Este for his title defence.
Last week he was beaten by Corentin Moutet of France in the first round in Cordoba, but negotiated that phase in Buenos Aires in Monday, defeating the Spaniard Jaume Munar in straight sets.
Borna Coric v Thiago Monteiro Predictions & Tips
Whilst Coric is the seeded player and higher ranked, he is in poor form and up against a man who has enjoyed recent success and is confident. In addition, Thiago is playing on his favourite surface of clay, whilst it is surprising that Coric has chosen to enter this event rather than one of the competing hard court tournaments.
Tip: Monteiro to win in three sets: 10/3 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
