Milos Raonic v Kwon Soon-wei Monteiro Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before in a competitive match. However, they did take part in an exhibition game in Kooyung, Australia, last month, with Raonic winning in straight sets.

Raonic, Looking to Climb Rankings Again

Raonic was a Wimbledon finalist in 2016, and has won eight ATP titles, although the last of those was two years ago. Since then a loss of form and injuries have seen him slip down the rankings and he has been supplanted as Canada’s top player, with both the young guns of Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger Aliassime  overtaking him.

Now back to full fitness again, he is determined to regain some of his previous lustre, although 2020 did not start well, with a first round defeat to Corentin Moutet of France in Doha. He then travelled to Australia and, after playing Kwon in that exhibition game, moved to Melbourne where, for the fifth time, he reached the quarter finals of the Australian Open.

During that run he claimed some impressive scalps including Christian Garin of Chile, Marin Cilic of Croatia and, most eye-catching of all, Stefanos Tsitsipas, defeating the number six seed in straight sets.

His involvement, though, was ended by Novak Djokovic, who went on to win the tournament.

Kwon, South Korean Number One

Kwon is currently the top ranked South Korean player and world number 84. He has never won a senior ATP title, but has enjoyed some success on the Challenger tour, reaching five finals, and winning two of them, both in 2019 – in Yokohama, Japan, and, in front of his home fans in Seoul.

He began his season in Canberra, where he reached the third round of the Challenger tournament, before losing in three sets to Evgeny Donskoy of Russia. He then played in that exhibition event in Kooying, losing to both Raonic and Cilic, and last week, entered the ATP event in Pune, India. Seeded four, he beat the local player Prajnesh Gunneswaran, but, after getting a bye in his next match, was beaten in the quarter-finals by Egor Gerasimov of Belarus.

However, he enjoyed a winning start in New York, beating Go Soeda of Japan in three sets on Wednesday.

Milos Raonic v Kwon Soon-wei Predictions & Tips

Raonic comes into this match buoyed by his performances in Melbourne. He also beat Kwon whilst preparing for that event and, whilst it was only an exhibition match, it is still a useful guide as to the relative form and strengths of the two men.

Tip: Raonic to win in straight sets: 4/7 (Click here to get these odds with Unibet)
