Elina Svitolina v Nao Hibino Head to Head

These two have played once before in a match at the 2018 Hong Kong Open and Svitolina dropped just three games en route her straight-set win. Incidentally they were to play once before that too in Kuala Lumpur in 2017 but Svitolina had pulled out of that second round encounter.

Svitolina Hoping to Get Back to Clinical Ways

The fourth-ranked Svitolina has had two easy wins in the tournament already and if she can maintain the level she has been playing at, there should be no real worries. That’s despite her strangely, slow start to the season.

First there was a shock first round loss at the Brisbane International, which was accentuated by the fact she was absolutely steamrolled, winning just two games in the match. A decent start at the Australian Open saw her get to the third round where she was sent out by the two-time Garbine Muguruza in another surprising result.

To be fair to Svitolina, Muguruza did make it to the final, showing a level of tennis which hasn’t been on offer for a while. That said, the worrying bit was again, she won only three games in that defeat.

Svitolina enters this tournament on the back of winning two singles out of the three she participated in but will be particularly happy with the way she has demolished both her opponents here. She has dropped just nine games across those rounds and will be hoping to continue in the same vein.

Hibino’s Moving Towards Her Best

Having begun the year ranked outside the top 100, Hibino needed to go through the qualifiers to make it to the main draw at the Australian Open having earlier failed to do so in Auckland. She won her three matches and then surprised Peng Shuai in the first round.

Maria Sakkari got the better of her in the second but that helped her break into the top 100 – currently 84th – and having reached the quarterfinal here, Hibino can expect herself to push higher up in the rankings.

She had beaten the 148th-ranked Arina Rodionova in the first round and then crushed the surprise second round entrant, Peangthan Pliphuech 6-0, 6-1.
